Duffy Power, who recorded an early cover version of “I Saw Her Standing There,” has died in the UK at age 72, reported the UK Guardian Feb 27.
According to Rockabilly.nl, Power was signed by Larry Parnes, along with Billy Fury, Marty Wilde and Dickie Pride. It was Parnes who booked the Silver Beetles to back Johnny Gentle on a tour of Scotland.
Power recorded the Beatles’ “I Saw Her Standing There” in 1963, one of the earliest cover versions of a Beatles song. He was backed on the recording by the Graham Bond Quartet, which featured John McLaughlin on guitar, Jack Bruce on bass and Ginger Baker on drums, the latter two later in Cream. (You can hear Power’s version on this page.)
The producer was Ron Richards, who was known for his work with the Hollies. Richards produced the Hollies doing a cover of the Beatles’ “If I Needed Someone.” It’s included in what is probably the most extensive compilation of the Hollies’ music in the six-CD “Clarke, Hicks and Nash Years.”
