Jon the titled character played by Joseph Gordon – Levitt, looking the part and speaking the role with a Jersey accent, lives his life for his boys, body, faith, family, pad and especially the girls.
His approach with the girls has bestowed upon him the title of the “Don” by his boys. His short-term game includes meeting the girls at the club where he bartends, buying them drinks and dancing with them before he beds them.
“The Don” of Jersey will have to step up his game when he encounters Barbara (Scarlett Johannson) at the scene. In the club speak she’s considered a dime – 10/10 out of in female physical attributes.
Ms. Johannson going Jersey proves that dimes aren’t really a dozen. In Jon’s quest to bed her must be methodical in his long-term approach. He has to meet her friends, improve himself, sitting through her obsession with romance films that include clever celebrity sightings and meeting of the family. On top of all that he must hide the fact of his affliction for Internet pornography.
The first half of the film, Mr. Gordon – Levitt who also wrote and directs, takes a look at society being obsessed with sexuality during the opening of the film. But the idea of his character and his addiction to porn is left mid-way as the film becoming a love story between the couple, before being addressed toward the end.
His interaction with his porn leaves him less satisfied with his real life conquests and relationships in that he can not connect on a spiritual and emotional level as his partner. He escapes to porn because it caters to his whim of his desire of the ideal female.
What begins as a casual encounter at the club leads to romance and future plans that delights Jon’s parents portrayed by Tony Danza and Glenne Headly. His sister, played by Brie Larson, is silent but ever observant in her brother’s affairs. It’s a nice change of pace to see Mr. Danza going against the grain with his portrayal as Jon Sr. and the intimate moments between father and son during dinner.
While trying to improve himself by taking night course at college at the insistence of Barbara, he meets Ester (Julianne Moore) who he begins to establish a connection. From that moment, the film inquires whether or not Jon is cheating on his girlfriend outside of his porn habits with someone with whom he connects with on an inner level.
As a character, Jon begins to break out of his aforementioned routine and mantra with which he lives life as his character goes from a one-night Casanova to a man who might be ready to settle down and proclaim the next heir to his Jersey Don.
