On April 30, after much speculation surrounding its return, promoters Mike Bindra and Laura DePalma announced that its EDM end-of-summer festival, Electric Zoo, had acquired its much needed park license and will return for sure this year at New York’s Randall’s Island Labor Day Weekend Friday Aug. 29—Sunday Aug. 31.
Due to two drug-related deaths that resulted in the cancellation of the festival’s culminating third day in 2013, deliberations had been made surrounding the festival to acquire the necessary permit for the festival to take place this year. In an effort to prevent last year’s events from occurring again, promoters intend to introduce new safety precautions that will crack down on drug-use during the festival

In an effort to devise a new plan that prevents incidents like last year’s from occurring again, Bindra and Depalma generated an advisory board comprised of doctors, DJs, and security consultants to impart their advice on what changes should be made at this year’s event. Now, for the first time festival attendees will be required to watch an antidrug public-service announcement online, delivered by electronic-music stars to activate the wristbands that provide entrance into the event. It has also been reported that drug-sniffing dogs, pat-down checks, and undercover officers patrolling the venue will be among the many number of changes that promoters plan to implement at this year’s festival.
To prevent attendees being deterred by the strict policies, Electric Zoo organizers have been considering offering “amnesty bins” at the gates where fans will be able to discard illicit substances without penalty before being searched. Since October, Mr. Bindra and Ms. DePalma have sold their 14-year-old promotion company, Made Event, to entertainment mogul Robert F.X. Sillerman’s EDM conglomerate, SFX Entertainment Inc., a corporation that has the resources to provide extensive on-site medical services needed at the festivals they run. The company will also be able to back the newly appointed security package procedures, which are expected to cost several hundreds of thousands of dollars more than last year’s, which was estimated being $428,000. SFX intends to apply the advisory board’s recommendations to all of its festivals, though precautions will vary for each event.
Trance Dutch artist Armin van Buuren, whose Electric Zoo performance was among those cancelled last year stated, “If they prohibit Electric Zoo, you’ll have more underground raves, which can be far more dangerous.” Still Mr. van Buuren said that accidents are inevitable once gatherings reach a certain scale, no matter how many precautions are taken or what kind of music is being played.
