March is Women’s History Month and what better way is there to celebrate Women and their History than to feature a Woman who is apart of History…Hip-Hop History that is.
Meet Power 106 FM DJ and the Co-Founder of the Young California movement, DJ Carisma.
Who is DJ Carisma?
A girl from Santa Ana who’s now a piece of Hip-Hop history.
When did you first discover your passion for music?
I was born with it really…Was always singing and dancing as a kid. My mom was a professional Hula dancer and she would always take me with her and I use to run her sound system. Then I began making mixtapes at a very young age on cassettes. I always wanted to be the first on new music at my school.
Was being a DJ is something you always wanted to pursue?
Since High School.
What is your connection with Hip-Hop artist and Actress “YoYo”?
(laughs) YoYo is the first artist I ever DJ’ed for. She was the first to take a chance on me…Even before I worked radio. She was the first one to take me traveling too – I love Yolanda, that’s my big sis!
How did Movin 93.9 change your life?
Shoutout to Junior Moreno and Rhea Be for taking a chance on me. I busted my ass at Movin 93.9 and that’s how I caught the attention of Power 106′s street team – My first radio gig. RIP Movin 93.9.
We read somewhere that you are responsible for discovering the New Boyz (Ben J and Legacy)…Who are some other artist that you played a role in helping jump start their career?
New Boyz, YG, DJ Mustard, Ty Dolla $ign, The Finatticz, Jonn Hart, TeeFlii and plus I was a big back and piece of the puzzle for many other west coast artist including Tyga.
We’ve been hearing a lot about the “Cookie Jar.” Can you tell us a little more about that?
Ahh yes, my baby – Hosted by my girl Abby De La Rosa. I’ve been doing Cookie Jar for four years now and it’s a exclusive new music, R&B show that airs live every Monday night at 9 PM on www.themixshow.com. We interview everyone from Ciara to Frank Ocean and tons more!
You play a major part in the Young California movement. Can you tell us more about that?
DJ Amen came to me with the idea and said let’s team up and create Young California. Amen and I have the same passion for our state, our coast, our cities and wow… It blew up!
YG recently released a visual for his remix of single “My Nigga” featuring Lil Wayne, Meek Mill, Nicki Minaj, Rich Homie Quan and you had a cameo. Congrats, look like you guys had a lot of fun!
It was a blast! I’m so proud of YG and Mustard. I was honored to be apart of such a epic song in Hip-Hop. Shoutout to Wayne, Meek, Nicki and Quan for supporting him!
You are currently the official DJ of Tee’Flii and Honey Cocaine…That’s dope! What is it like working with these two talented artist?
It’s great! I’m a huge fan of both of them, so it’s fun to watch them grow and being apart of their craft.
