Fascinating slate of tastings this week. A couple of shops are taking the day off, but the ones holding tastings have assembled some very deep, interesting offerings. Take a look. Go forth and taste the wine! Shop the wine! Buy the wine!

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 28th, 2014
“As a winemaker, I think Oregon is in a unique position. We not only grow some of the best cool climate grapes in the world, but we are also
blessed with some of the most diverse warm climatic regions as well. This is exciting from my perspective because I’m able to make great wines from a wide variety of grapes from all over the Northwest. We decided to start small and concentrate on quality, seeking out excellent vineyards that produce unique wines. The wines we create are hand-crafted and express the variety as well as the vineyards. We feel that our dedication to quality will be self evident when you taste our wine.”
John Derthick – Winemaker

This week our favorite German Importer, Ewald Moseler will be your host pouring selections from Germany, Austria and Oregon:
Bernkastel-Kueser Weisenstein Zimmermann Riesling Spätlese 1997 $23.99
The Anton Zimmermann estate is located inBernkastel-Kues, the heart of the Middle Mosel. For
generations the Zimmermann family has cultivated the steep slopes of the Weisenstein vineyard, an
under-appreciated vineyard nestled between more famous neighbors in Wehlen and Bernkastel.
The Zimmermann’s quality concept begins in the vineyard: during the winter months the
ancient Riesling vines are pruned such that only one or two branches remain for the new vintage.
This results in expressive, aromatic Riesling wines due to the naturally lower yields.
Soils of the Weisenstein vineyard consist of weathered blue slate giving the wines their unique mineral component.
Pazen Riesling 2011 $17.99
For as long as Ewald can remember, the Pazens have
been the family next door. The winery still occupies the
building across the narrow street where Ewald grow up
in the tiny village of Rachtig. From a few acres of vines
in the very good Zeltinger Himmelreich vineyard,
Reinhold Pazen (pronounced PAHT-sehn) make light,
delicately fruity wines that always have a clean,
refreshing lemony finish. These well-crafted wines are
among the best values we can offer.
Peter Schandl Pinot Blanc 2010 $22.99
1st PLACE! FALSTAFF BURGUNDERTROPHY
Fine, inviting stone-fruit bouquet.
Smoky, peach fruit taste, fine herbs and spices. Juicy,
fine yellow fruit, fresh acidity, long finish. Pleasant
sweetness in the finish.
High ageing potential .
Graacher Himmelreich Bernard-Kieren Riesling Kabinett 2012 $18.99
1st Federal Prize 2011 for Weingut Josef Bernard
Kieren from Graach!
The wine estate Josef Bernard-Kieren in Graach was
awarded, as the only wine estate in the Mosel region,
with the highest federal prize for wine by the German
Federal Ministry for food, agriculture and consumer
protection in Berlin.
The 2011 Riesling Kabinett was rated with 94 point at
the Wine & Spirit magazine.
Emil Reichart Riesling Spätlese Graacher Dompropst 2011 $18.99
The Emil Reichart Single Vineyard Series features
limited production, exceptionally well-crafted wines that
reveal a unique sense of place.
The wine was awarded a GOLD MEDAL DLG (Germany), as well as
a GOLD MEDAL at the Pacific Rim Wine Competition
April 2013 and also received 92 points and Best Buy
from Wine & Spirit Magazine December 2013.
“Bright and tight, this is a textbook Mosel, the fruit
plump, the delicate acidity so finely honed and precise
it feels like a wire pulled taut. It lasts with a glow, like
the sun glinting of metal, smooth and full” 92 points
Atticus Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2011 $22.99
Atticus Vineyard. Atticus Wine is a two family owned vineyard near
Yamhill in Oregon’s charming Willamette Valley. We
are committed to making handcrafted, quality wines,
capturing the unique essence of the Oregon Pinot Noir
grape with each vintage. Red cherries enveloped by sweet baking spices and
blue floral notes perfume the nose. On the palate, the
wine is elegant, balanced and framed with well
integrated tannins and a bright, juicy acidity. Less
than 450 cases were made.
2012 NEIN LIVES Sweet Red $9.99
Nein Lives Sweet Red has luscious, juicy flavors of
raspberry, black cherry, and pomegranate leading to a velvety finish.
Great to drink alone or enjoy with a grilled burger. Serve lightly
chilled. Collect all nine of our Nein Lives Kitties. Each vintage has three
designs in a case.
And there may be a mystery wine at Dave’s desk…

World’s Greatest $15 Red Wines!!
With all this awesome wine below I should get right to it although the obvious temptation right off the top, of course, is to rant about the “Arizona situation” and how any state in our country can be so homophobic, backwards, bigoted, and idiotic? And how can any governor be so spineless as to let a second pass, let alone a week, before vetoing such discriminatory legislation (also called in the political world as “covering your a**”)? But I’m not going there in this missive, because there is much joy and positive wine news to share, as you will find out
Have I ever mentioned that this is one of my favorite tastings to put together? During my weekly onslaught of wine reps who literally pour through the door here on SE 28th, I taste dozens and dozens of wines each week, sadly a remarkably few of which I deem worthy of your consideration. Among those that do get me excited, I can’t always fit them into whatever upcoming regionally or varietally themed Friday tastings we have scheduled. Hence the subject line above, where I can gather all these intriguing, very affordable bottles (which as you VINOphiles know is the raison d’être of our store) and show them all off at once. It is a delicious grab bag of wine with hopefully no disappointing surprises. This Friday I think (as I always seem to) that the lineup is extraordinarily strong, with some new to us wines, a couple of new vintages of old friends we have yet to show off, and some fabulous discounts that we have been able to strong-arm our distributors for. This is an exciting lineup below, with tastes that I can promise will have something for everyone….
–2009 DOMAINE DES 7 TERROIRS Bourgogne Rouge $15.95…last week’s E-Special and absurd pinot noir bargain deserves as wide an audience as possible!
–2010 CASALONE Barbera del Monferrato $13.95…also from the same E-Special, it has finally landed and is simply stunning Barbera for the $$.
–2010 DOMAINE BISCARELLE Cotes du Rhone Villages $15.95…if ever the phrase “Baby Chateauneuf du Pape” was appropriate, this is the time. Big, dark, intense, complex. A classic!
–2010 DEL RIO VINEYARDS Claret “Rogue Valley” $16.95…unusually balanced and rich, this is a special offer that was made to us that I couldn’t NOT take advantage of. You’ll see this southern Oregon beauty on shelves around town for well over $20 a pop! 53% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Malbec, 5% Cabernet Franc & 2% Petit Verdot
–2011 BODEGAS JUAN GIL Monastrell $16.95….I first carried this perennial beauty in the 2003 vintage. I recently opened a bottle from my basement of the 2005 vintage that was extraordinary. This new vintage is incredible, one of the best yet. I used it as a substitute pour in our recent Spanish tasting and people swooned!
And then for your bonus enjoyment, the World’s Greatest $23 , $34, and $42 red wines…..
Bonus #1-2011 RAYMOND VINEYARDS Merlot “Napa Valley”$22.95…you know I’m feeling pretty strongly about a wine if I put a Cali merlot into this august lineup. This is delicious and a classic, very well-priced Napa merlot!
Bonus#2-2012 WALTER SCOTT WINES Pinot Noir “Cuvée Ruth”$33.95…I continue to be overly impressed with winemaker Ken Pahlow’s wines. This reserve bottling from the excellent ’12 vintage is spot on. Without question Ken is a future Oregon star!
Bonus #3-2007 CASCINA TIOLE Barolo “San Stefano” $41.95…I tasted this astonishing single-vineyard Barolo this past Tuesday and was stunned at how good it was. Not cheap but as good as any Barolo I’ve had recently at up to twice the price. World class!
