The “Human Barbie,” 23-year-old Ukrainian model Valeria Lukyanova, says she has converted to “Breatharianism,” and can now subsist on only consuming “cosmic micro-food,” which she claims is nothing more than light and air.
The Hollywood Gossip reports today that Valeria’s stated goal was to survive “on air and light alone.” Of course, she also believes she is in regular contact with trans-dimensional beings, so her most recent claim comes as no jolt.
Unlike many things that orbit the obtuse world of the wacky model, Breatharianism is an actual following – at least as defined by the fact that the outlandish teaching has adherents.
According to rationalwiki.org, Breatharianism is an old, new age idea that “one can live without food and drink, and subsist only off of ‘pranic light.’ According to practitioners, pranic light is accurate, channeled information from a huge invisible spaceship hovering over North America.”
The site debunks the practice of those who feel they can harness “food” directly from the sun by staring at it. Breatharianism “frequently involves sun gazing in the dubious belief that nourishment can be gained directly from the sun’s energy through the eye, even though it is not a photosynthesizing organ.”
The practice is criticized of course as pseudoscience, complete claptrap, and several practitioners have reportedly died of starvation while they have attempted to glean nutrients necessary for the body from only air and light.
“In recent weeks I have not been hungry at all; I’m hoping it’s the final stage before I can subsist on air and light alone,” Lukyanova has said.
With her vacuumed up 19-inch waist, skeleton-like arms, enormously augmented chest, strangely colored contact lenses and heavy, heavy makeup, Valeria has indeed become analogous to the plastic Barbie doll that she so eminently worships.
Of course, while Lukyanova sees herself as the ultimate embodiment of perfection, we see a disgusting, inhuman fraud.
Critics have suggested that Valeria must have had ribs surgically removed – her impossibly thin waist could hardly have been formed by dieting alone. Others think she heavily Photoshops herself in pics to make her look skinnier than she is. She has denied it all.
The Daily Mail discusses some equally madcap thoughts that the Human Barbie would like to share:
“She has said that she is a spiritual teacher and can speak with aliens through light, she thinks that has the ability to time travel and has had out-of-body experiences…. Valeria agreed to a documentary which focused on her spiritual and astral theories, and her views on pre-Earth space.
“She revealed she believes she is from another planet – possibly Venus, but she isn’t quite sure – but is adamant she isn’t human. Valeria revealed has visited a psychiatrist about the voices in her head.”
Artist and researcher Nickolay Lamm, who published a piece called What Would Barbie Look Like as an Average Woman, said that Lukyanova is emblematic of what can happen when young girls internalize idealized proportions, like those of Barbie dolls.
“Young women who are healthy and fit, say ‘I need to lose some weight,’” Lamm said. “Who are they comparing themselves to? [Lukyanova] is so extreme that people think she’s a crazy weirdo and don’t look at the bigger, much more silent problem of young girls trying to achieve an impossible ideal.”
