If you have lost your pet or found a stray animal, please contact the Cleveland Pets Examiner or Lost & Found Ohio Pets with all of the information. The more information the better! Be sure to include date missing, area last seen, pet’s name – age – breed – and other distinguishing characteristics. Don’t forget to provide contact information and a photo.
Today’s Tip: protect your pet with this new Smartphone app
Finding Rover is a new smartphone app that helps people find their lost pets. Dog lover John Polimeno has used facial recognition technology to build the free IOS app with the help of the Software Development center at the University of Utah. The app works on an algorithm called Pet Match that uses machine learning and computer vision to identify key features of dogs that differentiate them from the rest of the canine population, such as eye shape and coat color.
Polimeno says they have tested the app by putting multiple dogs of the same breed into the app, and have found that a search brings up the correct dog 95% of the time in the top 5 matches.
The app allows you to take a control photo of your pet. There is even a “bark button” to get your pet’s attention when you are snapping the photo. You can see how the app works HERE.
Android and Web versions will be available in a few months, so people without Smartphones will still be able to use the technology.
Right now, the app is only for dogs, but Polimeno hopes to have a Finding Kitty app available in about 6 months.
The lost and found pets that appear in these articles want to be reunited with their families, and their families are looking for them! Remember, the found pets here that end up in shelters will only get a three day hold grace period, and after that they can be euthanized! If you see a pet in the list that is missing from your area, please keep on the lookout, and please continue to share with your friends.
The Cleveland Pets Examiner runs a Lost & Found Friday column each week. Check the list every Friday here in the Cleveland Pets column and share it with others who you think may be able to help or network the information.
