Forget the rumors about Lupita Nyong’o dating Jared Leto. Somali-Canadian rapper K’Naan is the special man in Lupita’s life. Lupita and K’Naan have been not-so-secretly dating for 6 months according to news reports on March 16 from Fashion & Style, CitiFM Online, the New Pittsburgh Courier Online and other media outlets.
Lupita, 31 and K’Naan, 36, have been very supportive of each other’s careers. K’Naan escorted Lupita to several pre-awards events, including the SAG Awards nominations in December. Via her social media accounts, Lupita has been telling her fans how much she loves K’Naan’s music and she attended his show at Hotel Café in Los Angeles last month.
The day after Lupita won her Oscar for supporting actress at the Academy Awards, K’Naan accompanied her as she made the talk show rounds. They were photographed together outside the studio of “Live! with Kelly & Michael” and the pictures of them cuddling affectionately quickly began circulating on the Net. K’Naan was holding her Oscar and that was an important clue since Lupita refused to let anyone else touch it or even take a picture of it the night before.
For K’Naan and Lupita, Humanitarian Issues are a Common Bond
Lupita and K’Naan bonded over mutual interests. Lupita likes K’Naan’s humanitarianism and both of them are passionate about African Issues.
K’Naan gained popularity as a musician after his song “Wavin’ Flag” was selected by Coca Cola to be the official anthem for the 2010 FIFA World Cup when it was hosted in South Africa.
Since establishing himself as a musician, K’naan has spoken out at various United Nations events, discussing the lack of aid made available to his homeland, Somalia during the Civil War.
He has drawn criticism for his stance on Somali pirates because he feels they serve a purpose. Citing illegal fishing and the dumping of toxic waste off the coast of Somalia, K’Naan said,
“Our pirates were the only deterrent we had from an externally imposed environmental disaster. One man’s pirate is another man’s coast guard.”
K’Naan’s Background and Personal Life
K’Naan (real name Keinan Abdi Warsame) was born and raised in raised in Mogadishu, Somalia. His family fled to Canada in the 90s at the start of the Somalia’s civil war, settling in the Rexdale neighborhood of Toronto after a brief stint in New York. K’Naan, who was 13 at the time, became involved in gang culture, and had a few run-ins with the law.
Now a successful musician, K’Naan has come a long way from the streets of Mogadishu and the ghettoes of Toronto. His past is behind him, and as a devout Muslim, he does not smoke or drink. Unfortunately when the news first broke that K’Naan and Lupita Nyong’o were a couple, many media outlets chose to focus on his gang affiliations and arrests when he was a teenager rather than the humanitarian aspects of his music career.
K’Naan has two sons with his ex-wife, pharmacy technician Deqa Warsame, but he and Lupita Nyong’o are said to be taking things slowly, so she hasn’t met his children yet.
We wish K’Naan and Lupita the best.
