Frankenstein’s Army begins with some background and plot setup while looking like a poorly made WWII film. As the story progresses the plot develops slightly while character development remains somewhat stagnant. Once the Russian troops encounter the Nazi monsters things get a bit more interesting due only to costuming and action while the plot all but disappears. The film winds down with a mild explanation and some unanswered questions.
Acting was okay here. Nothing exciting, and nobody really stood out. As a whole however, the cast seemed inexperienced but well rehearsed for the film.
Camera work was a mess here. The documentary filming perspective only worked part of the time but did explain some of the grainy, out of focus, and uncentered shots. That said, technical quality improved somewhat as the film progressed. Sets and backgrounds were good while at the same time feeling like the budget route was taken. Effects, which appeared to be all physical, were varied and interesting throughout the film was some entertaining creatures. Dialogue was hard to follow at times with heavy accents, and somewhat useless the rest of the time. Sound and soundtrack were both okay.
Overall the best word to describe Frankenstein’s Army is Inconsistent. Though Weird is a strong second choice. For what appears to be a lower budget sci-fi horror… not bad. Those who enjoy indie or cult B-movies will probably like this one while those who enjoy good production quality may be disappointed.
With plenty of gore, violence, grisly images, foul language, and disturbing images, save this one for older teens and above.
