Yet another remake of the classic, George is a scientist who is separated from his wife Felicity and son Dash when aliens invade Earth and begin destroying humans. As he struggles to find his family, George encounters the helpful Sgt. Kerry, the insane Lt. Samuelson, and the mentally questionable Pastor Victor. And he may also find a way to beat the aliens in the process.
C. Thomas Howell (George), Rhett Giles (Pastor Victor), Andrew Lauer (Sgt. Kerry), Finarie Van Wyk-Loots (Felicity), Jake Busey (Lt. Samuelson), Dash Howell (Alex).
This remake has a couple of twists from the original story but anyone who has read the book or seen other versions will recognize the storyline immediately. This version deals a bit more with the drama than the action but somehow manages to do so with little, or very poor, character development. Several times during the movie I was left feeling like things weren’t explained very well while at the same time wishing the plot would move along. The movie needed to decide if it was going to focus on the drama or the aliens but never did, and the mix just didn’t work.
Acting was a mixed bag. C.T. Howell brings energy but just doesn’t have the spark to make his performances more than average. Giles was nice to look at but is a lousy actor and the part he played didn’t help as he became just plain annoying. Lauer was good as usual and of course Busey plays a superb nutball. Wyk-Loots was okay but again, her role didn’t compliment her in the least.
Sets and background throughout the movie looked like they were filming in a dump or junkyard. Add the very poorly done alien effects and this one is half a step from being a B-movie. The bloody skeleton effects however were very nice and redeemed the movie a bit. Camera and sound were okay but overshadowed by poor dialogue.
Overall this was a poor remake of a wonderful story. There are much better versions out there so unless you insist on seeing all versions, skip this one.
Violence, gore, foul language, and some nudity so save this one for older teens and above.
