Struggling to overcome their son’s recent battle with the supernatural, the Lambert family finds that things aren’t quite over yet. As the family is found once again by supernatural spirits, this time father Josh must come to terms with his childhood while finding his way back from purgatory.
Patrick Wilson (Josh), Rose Byrne (Renai), Ty Simpkins (Dalton), Lin Shaye (Elise), Barbara Hershey (Lorraine), Steve Coulter (Carl), Leigh Whannell (Specs), Angus Sampson (Tucker), Andrew Astor (Foster).
Insidious Chapter 2 begins with a flashback that sets the groundwork for the storyline. From there character development is delivered in a schizophrenic manner with the storyline mashed on top making for a fairly fast moving film. As the story finally finds some coherence and begins to explain events things get more interesting, and scary with some good BOO moments. Although the story ends with a Happy Ever After moment, we are left wondering if things are really over or just quiet for the moment.
Acting was pretty good with Wilson and Byrne both delivering good performances and interacting well with one another. Simpkins got a bit less screen time in this one but still did a nice job. Hershey was toned down a bit and much more convincing than usual. The remainder of the supporting cast was solid and interesting.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are nicely done with good attention to detail. CGI effects were nicely done throughout with a good mix of subtle and terrifying. Physical effects were also good but only had a small role in the film. Dialogue was well done and explained the storyline nicely. Sound and soundtrack were both good.
Overall Insidious Chapter 2 is a fairly well done Supernatural Horror film building upon the storyline from the first film. To get the most out of this one, watch the original first. Fans of the first film will likely enjoy this the most.
With plenty of terror scenes, horror, violence, and disturbing elements, save this one for older teens and above.
