Oblivion begins well with some backstory and plot setup while moving into character development at the same time. We quickly learn there was a war on Earth against an alien race called Scavs, and although humans had to abandon Earth they built drones to continue eliminating any remaining Scavs in hopes of returning someday. But when a ship with a woman on board lands, Jack learns that what he believed to be true about his history may in fact be a lie. As his reality unravels, Jack realizes the truth may be better than the lie.
Acting was decent with Cruise delivering his usual. Freeman was a nice addition and did well despite a somewhat minimized role. Kurylenko and Riseborough both did well and played against Cruise nicely. The remainder of the cast was good as well.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were good but CGI stole the show in this one. From the landscape to vehicles and surroundings, the CGI was very well done with a very realistic feel. Physical effects were also nicely done. Dialogue was good with obvious plot direction in mind. Sound and soundtrack were solid.
Overall Oblivion may not be ground breaking sci-fi, but it is a solid film with good technical quality and performances. Sci-fi and apocalypse fans will enjoy this one while those insisting on a reality base for their films may find this one hard to swallow.
With some violence, foul language, and sensuality or nudity, this should be fine for teens and above.
