Lovell wakes up one morning to find it is a morning he has had before. Quickly realizing he is living his life day by day but out of order, Lovell believes he is being given the chance to solve the mystery behind his wife’s death.
T.J. Thyne (Lovell), Paula Rhodes (Grace), Chris Stone (Dr. Orson), Meeghan Holaway (Shelly), Dylan Sprayberry (Young Lovell), Elle Labadie (Young Grace), Michelle Krusiec (Kevin’s Mom), Patricia Belcher (Psychiatrist), Tamara Taylor (Linda).
Shuffle begins by giving us just enough information, in the form of a psychiatric evaluation, that we have a clue what is happening. From there the film floats through something like Groundhog Day, flirts briefly with some type of time travel, and finally decides to be a slightly supernatural thriller. All this time the story is engaging with a variety of settings punctuated by the psychological aspect of the storyline. The film finally wraps up with a fairly tepid Happy Ever After ending that will look familiar to many.
Acting was good in Shuffle but direction by Kurt Kuenne really stood out. Thyne did nicely in the lead and played well against both Rhodes and Taylor. Rhodes was a fun burst of energy while Taylor fit her part quite well. Stone was good as Lovell’s father, and presented nice emotion. Sprayberry, Labadie, and the remainder of the supporting cast was good.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were good and fit the film well. Impressive since the film changed time periods and locations very frequently. Effects were mild but good. Dialogue was very good being simple but complete. Sound and soundtrack were both well done.
Overall Shuffle is a well done thriller, though I would include that it is a bit supernatural. The storyline is engaging and the cast entertaining. Those who enjoy a lighter thriller will probably like this one while those looking for heavy action may be disappointed.
With some mild foul language and brief sexuality, this should be fine for teens and above.
