Sometimes, even in a burger-based world, you just want a gyro.
Or perhaps souvlaki, horiatiki and dolmades.
Mr. Gyros can get you all of the above and then some, and do it fast.
The newest of their three locations is small: seven tables inside, two outside and a short high-top counter. There are copper pots and Greek island scenes on the wall. But you won’t need scenery for long. The food takes about ten minutes from order to eat. All the classic Greek dishes are here, from their namesake gyro to falafel, moussaka, pastichio and spanakopita. All main dish items come with a choice of sides, or no sides at all. There are American and Greek beers, fountain sodas and plenty of bottled water choices.
And if you want to get off the well-traveled path of standard Greek dishes, you can try melizanosalata (eggplant spread), avgolemono (egg and lemon soup), loukaniko (Greek sausage) and horiatiki (a salad with no lettuce, just tomatoes, cucumber, green pepters, olives, feta, pepperoncini and dolmades, or stuffed grape leaves). There’s even a vegetarian gyro, packed with salad and hummus, plus the traditional onions, tomatoes and tzatziki sauce.
The gyro is almost too much to handle, even using two hands. The classic version, packed with thinly-shaved meat, lettuce, onion, tomato and sauce, is guaranteed to make a mess. Hint: keep the foil wrapping on and grab extra napkins. And the Greek fries, topped with herbs, feta and Parmesan, really work, even though it sounds like a top-heavy load.
There are sixteen heart-healthy items on the menu, and portions are quite large and easily shared. Appetizers are $4 to $10, salads and additional sides $3 to $8, gyros (with lamb, chicken or beef) are $8 to $10. The children’s menu consists of a single item (chicken on a stick) and there are only two dessert choices (baklava and kourambiedes, shortbread cookies covered in powdered sugar).
The décor at Mr. Gyros may not bring the Greek Isles to mind, but the food certainly does.
