“Noah” swept to the top on controversial waters to the tune of $44 million. Last weekend’s winner, “Divergent,” came in second with a solid $27.7 million.
While many will say this was a faith-based weekend at the box office, it also proved that controversy and twisting a Biblical tale sparks curiosity.
One could also indicate that those who lean more toward the Biblical tale of Noah and his ark, were not amused or swayed to this point of view. The debates will rage on but the movie won. It will be more interesting to see the next weekend’s drop. if it is 60-70 percent, then the argument that the faith-based audience were turned off and spread the word against, is on the table.
The movie does confuse. Noah kills people who are attacking the ark and there is a stowaway on board, too. Plus, the animals, which are a huge part of the story, are in slumber once they enter the ark, thanks to a magic incense. As for the rock people (“The Watchers”), just think “Transformers.” It is one thing to throw timelines and facts in a different direction with movies like “300” and ones of that nature. It is harder to swallow for ones like the Noah story, even if the special effects are fantastic. Oh, there’s more, but that should get this report into the next area now.

Still, “Noah,” described as a blockbuster, did not beat the total of “Divergent” in its first weekend. Perhaps “Divergent” really earned the title while “Noah” is playing catch-up. Or, the term gets used way too often. “300: Rise of an Empire” took in $45 million in its first weekend, but it is not clear if that got the term (“300” did). But, “300: Rise of an Empire” was right in line with “Noah.”
It seems the faith-based crowd more likely went, if it was in their area, to “God’s Not Dead.” While not in as many theaters as “Noah,” it continues its path of success. There will be many headlines mocking the faith-based audience who actually went to “Noah,” but less written about this movie.
But, one must see a movie like “Noah” in its first weekend to form the argument against it, one would think. Or for it, for that matter. The critics do not matter here and truth be told, rarely do. It is the public’s opinion and the masses. In the age of social media, the masses can easily outweigh the small pool of critics. The critics like it more than the audience does, as it is turning out.
The second week for “Divergent” proved worthy of a mention as it had a only 49 percent drop.
“Sabotage” was ignored, as expected while “Cesar Chavez” and “The Raid 2” looked to ignite a per screen average headline or two.
