Lakewood residents can register their front porch “jam session” on-line at clevelandorchestra.com/lakewood
As part of the upcoming “The Cleveland Orchestra at Home in Lakewood” project, the Cleveland Orchestra has announced “PORCHestra” (an afternoon of music on the front porches of various Lakewood residents). The event is sponsored by Charter One.
The city wide event will take place on Sunday, May 18, 2014 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. and will be followed by a special community performance at the Lakewood Public Library.
Those Lakewood residents interested in registering their porch for the event may do so online at www.clevelandorchestra.com/lakewood. Each resident who is chosen to participate will receive two free tickets to a Cleveland Orchestra concert at this year’s Blossom Music Festival. Each registered porch will be made available to the public as part of a Google Map that will indicate which porches in the city will be featuring musicians from the Cleveland Orchestra as well as the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra.
“At Charter One, we believe in giving back to the communities where we live and work,” said Joseph D. DiRocco, president of Charter One and RBS Citizens in Ohio. “The City of Lakewood has been a partner in our Charter One Growing Communities initiative to promote neighborhood revitalization in the Birdtown neighborhood. Now, we’re proud to support The Cleveland Orchestra at Home in Lakewood. The “PORCHestra” event will be a great opportunity for neighbors to come together to make and enjoy music throughout the city.”
“We are delighted to be partnering with the Lakewood community for this neighborhood residency,” commented Gary Hanson, executive director of The Cleveland Orchestra. “Throughout the week of May 17 to 24, performances and activities are being presented throughout Lakewood that showcases the power of music to inspire people and to bring people together. We are grateful to Charter One for sponsoring the “PORCHestra” on May 18. We look forward to seeing and hearing many Lakewood citizens playing music together on their porches.”
The afternoon of music making will culminate with an outdoor concert on the front porch of the downtown Lakewood Public Library at 5:15 p.m. with performances by the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus Chamber Ensemble, followed at 6:00 p.m. by members of The Cleveland Orchestra performing double-bass quartets and violin/viola duets.
In the weeks prior to the “PORCHestra” events, volunteers from the Orchestra, Charter One, and the community are renovating two front porches in partnership with LakewoodAlive.
