“The Deadliest Catch,” Discovery’s monster hit with an almost cult-like following, premiered its tenth season on April 22. The series, which focuses on Alaskan fisherman and their deadly jobs, reeled in huge ratings for Discovery. As posted by the Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday, more than 3.8 million viewers tuned in for the landmark 10th season premiere, preceded by “The Bait,” which drew in 2.2 million viewers.
On April 23, the Futon Critic pointed out that the 2014 “The Deadliest Catch” premiere on Tuesday was the biggest in three years, meaning longtime fans will continue to watch the now famous fisherman and their adventures on the Bering Sea. Viewers can’t seem to get enough of the salty captains and their hard-working crews.
In 2014, “The Deadliest Catch” focuses on veteran skippers and new young guns like Josh Harris and Mandy, Captain Sig Hansen’s 18-year-old daughter. Both will be featured during the second half of the season when the brave crew heads out for Opilio crab season. According to the preview that aired on Tuesday, Josh Harris returns to the Cornelia Maria, his father’s boat, after being a deckhand for two years on the Time Bandit.
During “The Bait,” Josh told the other captains that he saved every penny he had to buy the Cornelia Marie. He also said that he would have a co-captain for the first seasons to serve as his backup. His fellow fishermen replied favorably, including Captain Andy Hillstrand who stated, “It’s going to be nice when we all cruise out next year and see that boat cruising next to ours.” As posted by Zap2It on April 22, when the Cornelia Marie sails out for the first time, Jake Harris will also be aboard, along with Jim McManus, Phil’s friend. The season premiere of “The Deadliest Catch” focused on the government shutdown, which cost the fleet over $15 million, according to Jonathan Hillstrand and Entertainment Weekly. Future episodes will focus on the deadly challenges of the Bering Sea for Captains Sig Hansen of the Northwestern, Jonathan and Andy Hillstrand of the Time Bandit, Keith Colburn of the Wizard, “Wild” Bill Wichrowski of Cape Caution, Elliott Neese of the Saga, and Scott Campbell of the Seabrooke.
New episodes of “The Deadliest Catch” air every Tuesday night at 9 p.m. EST (8 p.m. CST) on Discovery.
