Lane Bryant just recently released its first ever designer collaboration with Cuban fashion designer Isabel Toledo. Isabel Toledo know for dressing Michelle Obama for the Presidential inauguration back in 2009 kept true to what she loves when creating this collection. By not straying from esthetic of textures, prints and shapes, Isabel Toledo created a collection that all plus size women will be coveting not just for their size range but for their beauty.
The 25 piece collection, which features pale coats, printed dresses, draped cocktail dresses and bustiers is a delightful combination of lace, prints and intricate detailing and even one monochromatic print that was created by her husband artist Ruben Toledo.
“Dressing women with curves is such a treat! When I was working, I forgot that it was plus-size. I didn’t want just sexy tight jersey—I wanted tailoring, not just stretchy things,” Toledo adds, admitting that she jumped at the chance to work with Lane Bryant. “I was thrilled—I haven’t been on the runway for a long time.” She explains that, design-wise, she didn’t do anything differently than she usually does. “After all, designers have always dressed clients of all sizes in their showrooms,” she says slyly. “Just not on their runways.” (Source: Vogue)
Although 54 pieces where seen on the runway at the Seagram Building in NYC, 25 pieces of the collection are available at Lane Bryant stores. The collection shows that women can wear anything they want regardless of their size as long as they pay attention to proportion and the right fit which can be a dilemma for anyone of any size.
“There’s a myth that this client only wants basics,” said Linda Heasley, the company’s chief executive. “She has been told she can’t wear horizontal stripes or she can’t wear belts. That’s not true. We wanted to change the conversation.”
Hopefully this is call to other high end designers to create more collections for women of all sizes that are amazing to look at, amazing to wear and are affordable for the everyday woman.
The entire collection ranges from $38 for a tote bag up to $179 for an embroidered long jacket. To see pieces of the collection just click through the slideshow or visit Lane Bryant by clicking here.
