In less than two hours, the top 5 contestants on “American Idol” will take the stage to compete for that sought after title. While many contestants fade into the unknown and you rarely hear from them, others have taken the world by storm and paved careers for themselves. From the inaugural winner Kelly Clarkson to fifth place contestant Daughtry, a handful of contestants and winners have had success stateside and across the globe.
Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood no doubt have had the most success. They’re driven ladies who are great at what they do in their respective genres and both have a top 5 best selling song from the “Idol” franchise.
The following list are the best selling songs from artists that came from the show.
No. 5 – Kelly Clarkson ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’
Kelly Clarkson has had almost 12 years of hits since winning “Idol.” In 2009, “My Life Would Suck Without You” broke the record for fastest jump to No. 1 on the Hot 100, going from 97 to 1 in just one week. This would be the second time Kelly broke that record, the first time beating a Beatles record when her inaugural single “A Moment Like This” blasted up the charts. “Suck” was a return to a more pop sound after her label (more so Clive Davis) tried to sabotage her harder driven third record My December. “My Life Would Suck Without You” has sold 2.76 million copies in the U.S.
No. 4 – Jordin Sparks ‘No Air’
Jordin Sparks won “Idol” in 2007 and had a sweet realness to her. She’s had moderate success here and there when she’s actually released music. Her hit single featuring Chris Brown “No Air” has sold 3.6 million copies.
No. 3 – Carrie Underwood ‘Before He Cheats’
Carrie Underwood took the country world by storm when she won season 4 of the show. With a powerful voice and stunning good looks, it’s no surprise this country gal has been able to make herself a household name. Her debut album Some Hearts is the best selling “Idol” album in the U.S. Single “Before He Cheats” was one of those rare instances where a country artist had a pop crossover hit. The feisty tune has sold 4 million copies.
No. 2 – Kelly Clarkson – ‘Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)’
Underwood held on to her sales for years until superstar Kelly Clarkson released her second single from her fifth album. The title track, reversing “What Doesn’t Kill You” to make it a simpler title for radio, “Stronger” became her third Hot 100 No. 1 and showed a fun dancy side. The song has sold over 4.5 million copies.
No. 1 – Phillip Phillips – Home
And the No. 1 best selling “Idol” song comes from winner of 2012. Phillip Phillips’ “Home” had great exposure when the USA Women’s Gymnastics Team used the song during their clips in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. The song is still getting some airplay as the songwriter gears up to release his second album next month. “Home” has sold over 5 million copies to date and his album is certified platinum.
