Because of their growing customer base, Patsy and Larry Vail, owners of Vail Wine Shop & Tasting Room, were delighted when they were offered a larger space on the waterfront side of Front Street in Coupeville. The space was occupied for the past 18 years by the Windjammer Gallery, and when Chuck and Sandy Poust, owners of the gallery, made the decision to retire, they offered it to the Vails.
The expanded Vail Wine Shop and Tasting Room at 22 NW Front Street is nearly double the size of their previous shop and has a wonderful outside patio which they look forward to using when the weather cooperates.
This new location offers more than just a larger space; in addition to daily wine tasting, it allows Vail Wine Shop to serve glasses and bottles of wine, micro brews and daily food service. Some wines are also on tap, and their increased inventory includes many new wines, all from Washington State wineries.
Food preparation and the daily small plates are provided by Chef Tyler Hansen of the Oystercatcher Restaurant. One of their cooperative and fun events is the ongoing Friday Nite Flights and Bites. Every Friday from 4:30 to 7:30 pm., Vail offers six wines and local “bites” prepared by the Oystercatcher. Cost is just $15, or $12 if you are a member of the Vail Wine Club.
About Patsy & Larry Vail
The Vails grew up in Eastern Washington, the heart of Washington’s wine country. Their relationships with growers and winemakers from the region began many years ago.
In 1991 they moved from Eastern Washington to Whidbey Island and opened the Vail Photography Studio in Coupeville. just a short distance from their wine shop now.
Their love of wine led them back to the Washington wine country, touring and tasting and talking about their personal interests in creating their own wine shop. They built their own wine collection and worked at understanding the qualities in excellent wines. They focused on the smaller, hand-crafted boutique wineries which produce high quality, limited production wines.
When their son, Erik, and daughter-in-law, Alison, took over the photography business a few years ago it allowed and Larry and Patsy to focus on their love of Washington wines. In November 2011, they opened up the Vail Wine Shop & Tasting Room in Mariners Court, at 23 Front Street in Coupeville.
